Singapore People’s Party (SPP) Election 2015

History

Established on 21 November 1994, the Singapore People’s Party (SPP) is a political party that has Singapore’s long-term interests at heart. It is determined to uphold parliamentary democracy in Singapore.

Party Chairman - Mrs Lina Chiam (Non-Constituency Member of Parliament)

Mrs Lina Chiam obtained a BA in Communication and Media Management from the University of South Australia. In GE 2011, she contested the constituency of Potong Pasir and garnered 49.64% of the vote. Subsequently she accepted the Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) seat in the 12th Parliament of Singapore.

She was Vice Chairman of the Potong Pasir Town Council and was legislative assistant to Mr Chiam See Tong, MP for Potong Pasir (1984 – 2011). From 1979 to 2003, she was a legal secretary at the law firm Chiam & Co, and was also in charge of conveyancing matters as well. She was a State Registered Nurse (SRN) in the United Kingdom and worked at a City of London Hospital.

Party Leadership - Sec General

Mr Chiam See Tong and Dr Chee Soon Juan

Mr Chiam See Tong was once the Secretary General of the SDP but was ousted after a battle royale with his former prodigy, Dr Chee Soon Juan, current Sec General of Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) . At the Party’s CEC meeting, Mr Chiam highlighted his concern about the manner of protest that Dr. Chee had chosen which could damage the reputation of the SDP. Mr Chiam sought to table a motion of censure against Dr. Chee, however, no one supported him. Disappointed, he took this as a vote of no confidence in him as the Sec-Gen and consequently resigned the position. He gave up the position and formally form SPP in 1994.

Mr Chiam See Tong a.k.a Iron Patriot of Singapore

Mr Chiam at the ripe age of 80 years old was Singapore's longest-serving opposition MP. He had suffered two strokes and, just last year, a hip injury but despite his ailing health, Mr Chiam shoulders on engaging and meeting residents with his party members. Mr Chiam is "a key figure in Singapore's political history as he has been a first-hand witness to a lot of important milestones in Singapore. Whilst Mr Chiam confirmed that he will not be contesting in GE 2015, he will act as adviser to his team members in the GE 2015 Election battle.

When asked if he would not yet be retiring from politics. Mr Chiam replied firmly "I've got a long way to go!". Go Mr Chiam, Iron Patriot of Singapore.

Party Ideology

SPP hopes to see a two-party system eventually emerging in Singapore. Only under such a political system can Singaporeans be assured of a truly democratic society as well as more check and balance for an accountable and transparent government.

2011 Election Results

At the 2011 general election, Chiam decided not to seek re-election in his Potong Pasir constituency and instead stood as a member of the SPP's team in the Bishan-Toa Payoh Group Representation Constituency. However the SPP was defeated by the PAP's team in Bishan-Toa Payoh.

The Potong Pasir SMC was the closest contested electoral division in the previous GE — Lina Chiam of the SPP was edged by PAP’s Sitoh Yih Pin by only 118 votes and accepted a seat as a Non Constituency Member of Parliament.

2015 Contesting Wards

The Singapore People’s Party (SPP) has confirmed they will be contesting in the following wards
  • Mountbatten SMC
  • Potong Pasir SMC
  • Hong Kah North SMC.
  • Bishan-Toa Payoh 5 Members GRC (SPP with DPP)
SPP can potentially capture 8 seats for the coming General Election.
